How to Protect a CGC Slab During Shipping
Most CGC slab damage doesn't happen on the shelf, it happens in transit. Here's how to ship a graded comic without losing sleep.
1. Start with the slab itself
Before anything goes near a box, snap a CGC slab protector onto the slab. A TPU bumper wraps the corners and outer edge, the surfaces that take 95% of the damage in transit. This is the layer most collectors skip, and it's the one that actually matters.
2. Wrap, don't crush
Wrap the slab in bubble wrap with the bubbles facing in, not out. Two full wraps is plenty. Avoid taping directly to the slab, tape the bubble wrap to itself.
3. Use a rigid mailer or double-box
A flexible bubble mailer is for postcards, not slabs. Use a rigid cardboard mailer sized to the slab, or double-box: small box inside a larger box with at least two inches of padding on every side.
4. Pad the corners specifically
If you only pad the flat faces, the corners still take impact when the box is dropped on edge. Add foam or bubble specifically at the corners of the inner box.
5. Mark it, but don't advertise it
"Fragile" stickers help. "$5,000 graded comic inside" stickers do not. Keep contents off the outside of the box.
6. Insure based on actual value
For high-value slabs, declared value on the shipping label is not the same as real insurance. Use a carrier policy or third-party insurer that covers the slab's market value, not just its replacement cost. None of this guarantees a slab arrives in the same condition it left in, no shipping process can. But every layer of protection cuts the probability of a problem. Start with the slab bumper. Then build the box around it.
